Ascent of Whiteoak Mountain on 2013-09-28Date: | Saturday, September 28, 2013 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Whiteoak Mountain | Location: | USA-North Carolina/South Carolina | Elevation: | 3297 ft / 1004 m |
Ascent Trip ReportWhiteoak Mountain is the sixth highest ranked peak in SC and is on the Eastern Continental Divide.
The Foothills Trail forks near the Sassafras Mountain summit parking lot. The main trail goes east to Table Rock State Park. You want the Foothills Spur Trail, which is a 14-mile section leading to Caesar's Head State Park. This spur begins across the road from the parking lot.
From Sassafras, descend 700 vertical feet on the Foothills Spur Trail to Sassafras Gap, and then climb 500 up the other side. Yellow blazes mark the state line. There are two 3280 contours on the summit of Whiteoak. The eastern one seems to be a little higher. It is supposed to be marked by BM Lake Toxaway 11, but I could not find it.
Sassafras Gap (2820) is the corner of Greenville, Pickens, and Transylvania counties. You'll cross a deep road cut that once was the Emory Gap Toll Road. (Emory Gap is a notch between Hickorynut Mountain and Pinnacle Mountain on the west end of Table Rock State Park.) This road was abandoned after US178 was routed west of Sassafras through Eastatoe Gap, which is almost 200 feet lower than Sassafras Gap.
