Ascent Trip ReportI parked in the newfound gap parking lot and left my car at 7:24 in the morning and was heading south on the Appalachian Trail. The sign stated 7.9 miles to Clingmans Dome. I made my way along the trail to Mount Collins and then to Mount Love. I went half way down the Mouth Collins trail to its shelter, then turned around and when back to the AT. Neither peak is marked or easy to identify and walk off the trail in a couple places that looked like the peak. There is no cairn or clearing to mark the peaks. You can kind of pick out the highest point, but it is not easy. I continued going till I reach the top of Clingmans Dome at 10:30. It was very cloudy all day and I had no views. I walked to the top of the observation deck and read the postings on the east and north sides. I went back down to the top of Clingmans Dome to take a break before heading back to my car. I hiked the 7.9 miles back to Newfound Gap (over Mount Love and Mount Collins) and arrived at my car around 1:24. When I arrived at Newfound Gap the sun had come out and was burning off some of the cloud cover. For a total I hiked ~16.3 miles.
