Ascent Trip Report

the italian and i hiked into dry lake from fish creek th. was to be a 4-day hike along the ridge with a shuttle, but one of the trucks overheated. intended to hike in from fish creek and out angeles oaks.

2nd day- 7-2-08- we hiked up to san g. mark aka darwin wandered up behind us. we were surprised to see each other. the wilderness was empty. he had hiked in from fish creek th as well, and had camped on the ridge above dry lake at fish creek saddle. on the way up, we had to hike into the mountain side to get around an ice patch just above the infamous skyline switches. chipmunks were not interested in us this time. strange. we spent 2 hours up there relaxing, talking with mark, looking out over the skyline. mark was going to dry camp the peak and had brought 6 liters of water.

3rd- 7-3-08- day we hiked up to mineshaft saddle and then investigated mineshaft flats. we saw darwin up ahead of us headed for big tree camp. it had been windy at the peak. we wondered if he had decided enough was enough. but at mineshaft flats one could feel the hot winds blowing up from coachella. after getting back to the ridge, we headed to fish creek saddle and cross-countried up grinnell mtn trying to stay on a use trail. boy scout troop 719 left a register there on 6-28-08. the boys had listed their names. wow, about a dozen had hiked up! the register consisted of a plastic bag containing a notepad. no pencil. and a rock to hold it down. love this peak. it has a large flat summit, heavily wooded. but, because it is so wooded, no views. trees in the way.

hiked out on 4th day. lots of folks heading up for independence day weekend. time for us to exit! had dry lake to ourselves for 4 days. not another soul.

saw chipmunks, clark's nutcrackers, tanagers, bats, large brown spiders (one in my tent), gnatcatcher-like birds, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and lots and lots of gnats.

beautiful mountain wildflowers.

last year at this time, dry lake was 1/3rd full, no snow patches, and dollar lake was dry. this year, dry lake was dry, snow patches up to san g, and a wet dollar lake. amazing.
