Ascent Trip Report

Got a lazy start out of Shelton with my dad around noon. Drove to the lower trailhead where we wouldn't need a parking permit and could get warmed up for the hike.

The hike starts out at a gentle slope as it winds through a fir and pine forrest. Then, shortly after the intersection with the upper trailhead, the trail begins switchbacking and getting steeper. Taking the summer trail, leads to a boulder field, where the tread becomes more rocky, uneven and challenging and some light class 2 hiking is required. The trail then goes up several steps put in place to the forest service to reach the crest.

Take a right (North) once you reach the crest and continue climbing 500ft or so to get directly below the summit. From here, there are multiple approaches to get up - we opted for the class 2 scramble up the east side. Once on the summit, the true highpoint is just a 5 ft. class three scramble away.

Excellent views on the summit of the Olympics, Mount Washington, Mount Rainier, Lake Cushman, Hood Canal, and Puget Sound. The views are are some of the best I've had this hiking season. No wonder there were so many families on the trail!

It was a fantastic hike and was doable by my father, who was excited about finally being on top of the mountains he had been looking at from his cabin for 50 years.
