Ascent Trip Report

We got off route and up in the ridge too early. The upclimbing was not too bad, but we did not have a rope so the retreat was not fun. We elected to back off, as going up further would have made it worse.
Looking up from Crater Lake, I assume you need to go left of the rocky band that extends down from the ridge (of course, I have not summited so this is conjecture). Next time we will stay on the scree and talus slope much longer and get way more altitude before going for the ridge. Avoid all the rocky ourcroppings that are coming down from the ridge, even if they look inviting initially.
We hiked in from the Summit Trailhead. About 8 miles in. Nice hike. The Wallowa guidebook is somewhat dated, but for the most part the trail is obvious. At one point you cross a fence, that is unmarked. The cows leave you alone, but dodging runny piles of goo they left behind makes for an interesting mile while you are crossing their field.
