Ascent Trip ReportAfter bagging 5 peaks in the previous 2 days, I honestly did not want climb Ampersand this morning. However, living just under 2 hours away and having come out here with the plan of finishing our Saranac Lake 6ers, Dave and I would not leave this one undone. We left the TH on Rte. 3 at 9 a.m. and we were standing at the summit bolt at 10:42 to finish our challenge. It was long after that the summit began to get crowded with other dogs and people. We had it to ourselves for only about 5 minutes, between speaking with the 2 nice ladies who we chatted with as they were leaving and the couple groups coming up right behind us. We took our pictures but didn't linger long on the summit. Dave is a lot like me in that the summit is a goal, but not always the destination. I usually like to get up and get back and only wish I had the mindset of being able to spend 2 hours on a summit lounging around. However, I view it as having the elevation behind me, but still half the distance to go and it's tough for me to relax when there's work to be done.
We made as good a time as we could on the way down, but it was surprising at how many people were coming up the trail for it being a Monday. We were constantly stopping to talk or to let them pet Jax. We soon caught up to the 2 women (never got their names) that we had met on the summit and we finished the hike back to the TH together. It was a clear and beautiful day and Dave and I were excited to have finished the challenge. From the overcrowded TH, we drove straight to Berkeley Green in Saranac Lake and rang the bell 6 times each to signify our completion of the challenge. I would love to see more challenges like this. The 46ers are great and I'm on my way to being one, but smaller challenges are a great way to get other people into hiking who may be intimidated by something as daunting as the 46 High Peaks.
