Ascent Trip ReportHaving just climbed McKenzie, we came back down the trail junction 2.4 miles from where we parked on Rte. 86 and turned to go the 0.9 miles up to the top of Haystack while we where already out there. And while the distance is only 0.9 miles one way, it does involve some 840 feet elevation gain according to the map. We made decent time, but I was definitely dragging by the time we made the summit and was happy to relax for 10-15 minutes and chat with the handful of people already up there. We soon turned our sights towards getting back to the truck and finished in good shape, making it the 0.9 miles back to the junction with the trail to McKenzie and then the remaining 2.4 miles back to the TH (a section of trail that I counted towards the McKenzie hike). With all out breaks, we still completed the 12.4 mile hike to bag both McKenzie and Haystack in just over 8 hours and went straight to the McDonalds up the road in Saranac Lake to refuel on a couple of well-deserved cheesebugers. Jax even got his own and I've never seen a dog eat that fast!
Haystack was our 4th peak of the Saranac Lake 6ers and my 24th overall on the year.
