Ascent Trip Report

Dave, Jax and I had 2 of the Saranac Lake 6ers done from 3 weeks ago, so we planned another trip out to try and finish them all. We stayed at Blue Jay Campsite in Tupper Lake again, this time meeting there the evening before, so we were already somewhat in the area, meaning we'd get a much needed early start. We were at the Haystack Mt. trailhead around 9 a.m. and made great time on the relatively flat trail. At 2.4 miles in, we opted to tackle the farther, higher peak first and went to the right towards McKenzie. The next 1.2 miles to the intersection with the trail from the Whiteface Inn Rd. found us now gaining in elevation. Once on the main McKenzie trail (3.6 miles from Rte. 86), the elevation gain began in earnest and we saw few people. The trail was muddy and my feet were soaked from being caught off balance and pulled into a deep puddle by Jax, my gold retriever, who seems to actively seek out the mud!

The next 1.7 miles from the junction to the summit of McKenzie is considerably tougher and our progress had slowed considerably. It's also quite disheartening to cross the tops of 4 false summits before finally reaching the 5th and true summit. We stopped at an outlook to the northeast and rested for a few minutes before heading back to the trail junction with Haystack. Because we jumped over and did Haystack as well, I'm counting that hike as being from this junction 2.4 miles in from the TH. Therefore doing McKenzie along would be 10.6 miles round trip.
