Picked by Cynthia Cannady in her Nissan Versa at 1:30 PM on Thursday, 7/18. We drove to Freeways/Highways 210, 5, 99, to 198 which took us to Three Rivers, arriving at 5:30 PM. We had dinner at the River View Restaurant & Lounge. We then drove to Lodgepole Campground (7,400’) in Sequoia National Park met the other trip participants and set up tents at campsite No. 74. Lights out at 9:00 PM.
We woke on Friday, 7/19, had breakfast, broke camp then drove south on Hwy. 198 to the Wolverton Trailhead (7,300’). We started hiking at 9:00 AM for 4.5 miles and stopped for lunch at Mehrten Meadows (8,500’). We then hiked an additional 2.7 miles to Alta Meadows (9,350’) arriving at 3:30 PM, averaging 1.8 miles/hour. The wildflowers along the way were varied and in full bloom - beautiful. Starting at 6:00 PM we had happy hour and dinner together in our selected cooking area. Lights out at 9:00 PM. Nearly a full moon.
We woke on Saturday, 7/20, had breakfast together in the cooking area at 7:30 AM. Starting at 8:30 AM we hiked 3.0 miles cross-country towards Moose Lake (11,550’) crossing over 2 ridges along the way, taking about 5 hours (including frequent breaks) averaging 1.6 miles/hour. We went swimming in Moose Lake, had lunch, and started back at 3:30 PM returning cross-country on the same path, arriving back at our campsite in Alta Meadow at 5:30 PM. We saw a young bear walking through the campsite. We had dinner in the cooking area at 7:00 PM. Lights out at 9:00 PM.
On Sunday, 7/21, three participants (Daniel, Bob, Marik) woke and started at 6:00 AM scrambling up to Alta Peak (an SPS peak at 11,204’). The remaining 7 of us woke, had breakfast and broke camp readying our packs for departure. The Alta Peak hikers returned at 9:30 AM. We all departed our campsite (9,350’) at 10:30 AM heading down the trail arriving at the Wolverton trailhead (7,300’) at 1:00 PM, averaging 2.5 miles/hour. Cynthia and I drove north to the Lodgepole Campground entrance visiting the National Park Service Visitor Center where we purchased some hiking & geology books. We then drove south on Highway 198 to join up with the rest of the group in Three Rivers at The Gateway Restaurant and Lodge where we had a group lunch. We departed by 4:45 PM, drove south on Highways 198, 99 to 5, to 210. I arrived home 8:30 PM.
