After the Backbone Mountain experience, I was not yet done, I decided to drive the short distance to WV's Spruce Knob. I accepted the fact that this would be my first nighttime summit. I was in the area, and I saw no reason to put it off. I drove past the impressive Seneca Rocks along the way to this highpoint. I can understand why there is such an attraction to climbing here.

The drive up Spruce Knob was another epic ascent for my jeep, the third such climb on this trip. First, there was the Mount Mansfield Auto Road. Then, there was the Mount Washington Auto Road. And finally, there was Spruce Knob. Any vehicle in good condition should be able to make these climbs without a problem. But I am sure glad I had complete new brakes put on all 4 wheels, even if it was out of necessity, when I was in Massachusetts. My brakes in their prior state were not in good condition!

I arrived at the summit around 10pm, in total darkness. I grabbed my flashlights again, needed this time to guide my up the gravel path 900 feet to the summit observation tower. Once I arrived there, I wandered around the base of the tower and stepped on all high areas of interest. I climbed the tower just to say I did. This was my 26th state HP completion plus the District of Columbia.

I returned to the jeep, drove back down the mountain, and found my way to a bigger city where I rested for several hours. After ample rest along the way, I arrived home without incident on Sunday afternoon around 3pm.
