Ascent Trip ReportFrom Herman Hill, follow the atv trails generally south and west. Many of these had areas that were full of water, and the bugs were terrible. There are a few crossing trails which can make it confusing. I met two mountain bikers that were quite turned around, and the three of us couldn't find where they wanted to go on my GPS. The easiest way to Drag Hill from Herman would be to hike east back to the pipeline right of way, and take that south to another pipeline right of way which heads southwest right to the summit of Drag Hill, but this is in the open, with trash all around, and not very nice (this is the way I headed back to my car). I would follow the trail/atv path on the topo to where it hits the Cannonball Trail near Bear Swamp. There is a yet another natural gas pipeline that shows as a dirt road on the topo. Here, a worker for the gas pipeline stopped me and said they were doing construction at the junction and I couldn't continue up the road. He suggested (and was very nice), that I continue on the Cannonball Trail until I saw a bridge and a blazed trail that would take me up to the summit. I followed his directions for about 200 yards, then just bushwhacked straight up the hill. As I got near the summit, I realized that Drag Hill is right on one of the right of ways for the gas pipeline. I scrambled up the rocky peak, and bushwhacked down the east side of the hill. It would have been much easier to just go back down the right of way, but I would have bumped back into the friendly security guy. I just contoured around the 900 foot level until I found a Silver Blazed trail, took that to close to the right of way that headed back to the north. I followed that to my car in the epic heat.
