Ascent Trip ReportA service road walk with a short bushwack to 2 peaks .....5.5km, 1h50 hours RT.
This is the first day of a 36 DAY COUNTY HIGH POINTING TRIP "MARITIMES 2013", the high lights of which will be the NB/PEI COHPs, USA High Pointers Convention in Millinocket ME, and the Ferry ride PEI/Isle de-la-Madeleine.
We drove east on Autoroute 20 to exit 414 (Saint Aubert), where we drove southeast on #204 (going through St Aubert and Saint Damase) for 16.5km to a right turn on Chemin Arago (large 2 story building on corner), 5.8km southwest on the dirt road to a gated dirt-service-road on the right. Parked here this was my TH.
I walked the service road as it winds/climbs northwest about 2.5km to the summit of MOUNT FOURNIER-SOUTHWEST PEAK ..... capped with 5 Communication Towers, I chose the HP on the east side of the Towers at 47.12111,-70.15276.
I backtracked to about .8km before the Southwest Peak (at a crest on a right bend where the road descends moderately steep, at coordinates 47.12271,-70.14452) where I started my bushwack to MOUNT FOURNIER ...... I bushwacked magnetic north in moderately steep/dense woods (mostly conifer) 200 meters to the wooded summit with no views. A 4 foot tall aluminum tri-pod loosely sits on a rock with an embedded BM. To one side is a Survey Post with a broken (on the ground) Orange Marker "REPERE GEODESIQUE #12204". The actual HP is 15 yards to the southwest at GPS 47.12371,-70.14602.
