Ascent Trip ReportDrove to Kootenay trailhead. Road that Edward Earl took (and later Bob P/Ken J with Kootenay Mountaineering Club) is still gated and locked, so we followed Petter Bjorstad's excellent report:
We found a nasty surprise - the road is now gated at Toby Road, 3.5 miles before where Petter started his ascent. The road is also no longer passable by passenger vehicles unless you have a lot of nerve.
Alan and I climbed Kootenay (ultra-prom peak just over the US border in Canada) with Darkwoods permit (which nobody checked). Lots of road walking, a steep bushwhack up and over a ridge and a nice easy scramble. Weather was bad - thunderstorms around but not above us at summit. 23.5 miles, 6000' gain, 11h45m. I would strongly recommend trying to coordinate a visit with the Kootenay Mountaineering Club to make this trip much easier.
