Ascent Trip ReportPeak #1 in a 2-peak San Gorgonio summit day!
Last LONG training hike before our 8K challenge in 2 weeks. The goal was to summit San Gorgonio via Vivian Creek Trail 2x in one day - and we did!
Started hiking at approx 4:18 am. Easy trail to follow with headlamps and we felt good. Drank a little water on the way up, but didn't really eat anything. Reached the top by 7:48 am - exactly 3:30 after we started. Felt strong all the way up - but I've been at higher altitude, which has helped tremendously. The final pitch was steeper than I remember, but otherwise everything felt great. Pace wasn't too fast, and it felt like something we could maintain. Took 5 minutes at the top and descended in approx 3:00 hours. On the way down, I ate a Vanilla Honey Stingers Wafter, and had a package of Margarita Cliff Shot Blocks (salt - yum)!. Once crossing Vivan Creek, I ate a ProBar in prep for our second round of climbing the peak. Spent approx 10 minutes at the car, topping off bottles, and replenishing our nutrition. I had a 32 oz Nalgene with 4 NUUN tablets - it was great! Set off hiking again at 11:0- or 11:1- something.
Hike #2 to the San G summit via Vivan Creek - approx 3:46 total time up, with a breif 4 minute break at the San Jac overlook. Felt solid all the way up, but a little more tired. Got into a great rythm going up the switchbacks before the overlook. The steep final 1,000 feet didn't feel as bad this time - maybe we both knew what to expect. This time I shared my Margarita Shot blocks, had 4 Orange Shot blocks on the way up. Once at the top. I had another 28 oz of NUUN, a little bit of Pork Jerkey, and a handful of goldfish crackers. Spent 10 minutes at the peak and descended in 3:03
Total time out was 13:56.
Total hiking time was 13:28
Distance covered - 36.4 miles
Elevation gain - 10,750 or something about that.
Epic day... we ended up at Chipotle and I had the BEST burrito ever!
