Ascent Trip Report

Big trip, first of season for Everett. Question of fording John's Brook was point of discussion by many over-worried old timers at JBL. River dropped 3 feet from crest by morning and the ford was a walk across. (we came in on Friday to JBL through flooded trails with limited mud - valley streams were highest since Irene).

We joined with Paul and two women to make the crossing, parting ways after Slant Rock at the Shorey Short Cut trail. Made great time 3.9 miles at 90 minutes. From there on, the pace slowed a lot!

Shorey was a rough trail, but nice. The drop down to Haystack Brook was annoying as noted by the guidebooks. No view to Haystack was available. Basin felt steep going up and views started to open with skidding cloud cover whirling over the peaks.

Lunch on Basin at 1pm - 5 hrs in. We caught up with the party that left at 6am so we were about 2 hrs faster. It wasn't long til the drop off Basin was reached with its steep set of descents. The view of the climb up Saddleback had Everett questioning what the heck. Saddleback was quickly reached and at the only spot where no hand hold was in reach we did a rope safety spot. The mile from basin to saddleback took 1 1/4 hours. Second lunch on Saddleback at 2:15 with great majestic views constantly changing. The second hump on Saddleback was cleared and the long descent along the slide was done in what seemed a long time. Legs and backs were stiffening. A brief break at the orebed leanto and one to the ford of orebed brook back to jbl. We talked about dialects of many romance languages on the way.

Repacked at JBL to pick up the night gear and slogged out through nasty churned up mud. Feet were well beaten by then in the minimalists! We finished up the 13 mile trip at the garden around 6:30 for a 10.5 hr jaunt! Gave a ride to some sorry guys from Grand Island back to Rooster Comb and capped the day off at Ausable Inn.
