Ascent Trip ReportThe dog and I left the house just before 6:30 to drive up and meet our friend Mike and his 2 dogs at the Cat and Thomas Mountains Preserve TH near Bolton Landing. Very easy to find. Take Exit 24 of I-87 and drive East on County Rte. 11 for about 2 miles and you'll see Valley Woods Rd. on your right at the top of the hill. The parking area is directly on your right after turning onto the road and is big enough for 6-8 cars, but you could easily park out on the road as well.
We followed the Yellow Trail to the summit of Cat Mt. first, which was mostly and old logging road. Despite all the recent rain, the trail wasn't really all that wet compared to what we were expecting. What we did see was hundreds of Red Efts, which are the bright orange-red, teenage stage of the Eastern Newt's life cycle. We were at the summit in about 1 hour and 20 min., where we stopped to let ourselves and the dogs have a drink. Then we followed the old ridge trail, now called the Richard Hayes Phillips Trail to the summit of Thomas Mt.
