Ascent Trip ReportParked at South Fork Trailhead. Hit the trail a little later than planned at 0645. This hike, on the longest daylight day of the year, was a training hike so carried a 35 lb pack which included 3 liters of water. The forecast was to be 70 degrees at the summit. Made great time to Horse Meadows and Poopout Hill. I decided to do Poopout Hill on the way up as I didn't know if endurance later would deter my decision. Great photo of the peak from Poopout Hill. Just after Poopout Hill you enter the wilderness permit required area. Made great time to South Fork Meadows which for this trip was the last water available, so topped off and filled an additional 2 liters which increased pack weight to just over 40 lbs. Needless to say this slowed me down the rest of the day. I used 4 liters to make the round trip back to this point so I planned it well. 2-3 liters would have been suffice if I had a much lighter pack. This hike I was going via the Dollar Lake Trail. I had my first rest break on a vista just about a half mile from Dollar Lake. I would take breaks every hr thereafter. I encountered my first hikers at the Dollar Lake Saddle which is 7+ miles from the TH and 3+ miles to the summit. I was admiring the views and the other nearby peaks thinking of future adventures. I continued to trod along towards the summit. Each turns at a ridge along the way kept giving the false idea of the summit is just right there; which turned out to be not the summit but a ridge .3 miles short of the summit. I encountered about 6 people total within a mile of the peak up and down; but like a majority of the day, I had the peak to myself. Signed the register, took pictures of the sign and of the benchmark. On the return, I scrambled up what is labeled San Gorgonio Mtn Northwest Slope. I returned via the same route up; making good time back to Dollar Lake Saddle. Just below Dollar Lake, I encountered a Boy Scout Troop from my area that were camping at the Lake and summiting early the next day due to the warm weather. I never saw anyone else the rest of the trip. I had 1 liter of water left when I reached South Fork Meadows which was enough to make the trailhead/parking lot. I did stop again at Poopout Hill on the way back as there was an awesome full moon above the setting sun rays on the peak; great photo to remember the adventure. Note: besides sunscreen, I used bug repellant occassionally to keep the pesty flies and/or other bugs from disturbing my day ;) |
