Ascent Trip ReportFull Trip Summary:
The original plan was to hike Mt Roberts and then head to Faraway Mountain if I felt like it. However I missed the Mt. Robert trail head so decided to just take the Old Creek Trail to the Faraway Trail and hit that peak first. Other trip reports mentioned that heading down via the Mt Roberts Trail gave some good views so this seemed like a good change of plans.
The Old Creek and Faraway trails are wide old wagon trails overgrown with grass. Therefore the grade wasn't very steep and I could set a decent pace. No views to speak of until you get to the Faraway Lookout (which Peakbagger has listed as the shorter of the pair of Faraway peaks) and then you have a great view over the lakes looking towards the Belknap Mts.
Continuing on the High Ridge Trail you will notice an old unmarked wagon trail to your right with a chain hanging to block the path. I took this trail to head over to the "real" Faraway peak. There were no posted signs so I felt fine doing this and reached the peak with radio towers and fences. Got a glimpse and headed back to the High Ridge Trail.
Pushed to Mt Roberts next. The view from the peak was rather disappointing and I was surprised it was on the "52 With a View" list. After eating some lunch continued down the Mt Roberts Trail and here is where the best views are (and probably why it's on the list)! Hiking down this trail worked perfect as I could really enjoy the view over the lakes region.
Overall a nice peaceful hike, I only encountered two people over 7+ miles, with some decent views. Saw both deer and moose tracks but only encountered a number of snakes, oh well.
