Ascent Trip ReportStarted out at Springtime Campground and then headed South for about 3 miles on FR 225. Veered West onto an abandoned mining road. Left the road around Turkey Springs which was still flowing enough despite our multiyear drought for the dog to drink out of a roll around in. It could probably be used as a water source, but would definitely need to be filtered.
From here we began scrambling straight up the southeast scree slope. About 500ft shy of the summit, the slope steepens and the terrain becomes cliffy with several valleys between walls of cliffs. The first "Valley" we tried was too much class 3 climbing for the dog to handle, so we descended a few hundred feet and tried the next one to the right. This was mostly class 2 scrambling with a short, easy class 3 section. We made it to the shallower upper slopes of the peak before it started thundering and hailing. After hiding out for about half an hour for the storm to pass, we easily made the summit.
The summit is marked by a gigantic cairn and a Benchmark. Fantastic views are had at the summit of the entire Apache Kid Wilderness (West Blue, San Mateo Peak).
