Ascent Trip ReportThe COHP.ORG gives 4 candidate high point areas for this county. Its evident to me after my visit that only 2 areas are contenders, both in the PB library ...... Ohio County High Point and West Alexander benchmark. Details are below.
OHIO COUNTY HIGH POINT
I started out with M Schwartz TR of 2000 ..... he gives 3 areas west of Dallas.
From I-70, exit 11 (east of Wheeling) I drove south on Dallas Pike Road for about 5 miles to a right on Stone Church Road, 1.74 miles west I stayed right at the fork on Stone Church Road and continued for another .37 miles to a crest-of-the-road and Michael's Area 1 to the left.
AREA 1 .... at house "#311 The Hamlins", 78 year old Wendell answered the door, he's had others here in the past. Had a nice long chat, visited the high ground behind his house .... a bird house caps the summit, he says "Its for blue birds". The Ohio County Line sign on the road is north of the house, Wendell told me that this is wrong. The line is south of his house in his driveway, he pays taxes to both counties (Marshall and Ohio).
We agreed that the Area 3 to the north looks higher.
AREA 2 & 3 .... I continued north on Stone Church Road for another .25 miles to a sharp right on Oklahoma Road, at 50 yards east a driveway climbs left to Area 2 and in 150 yards Area 3 driveway is to the right.
I drove up to Area 2 (no need to get out of the van, its much lower). At Area 3 I found no one home at the house ... built right on the summit. I walked its perimeter, eyed leveled the area and concluded that "BOTH AREAS 1 & 2 ARE LOWER IN ELEVATION AND NEED NOT BE VISITED". I stopped-in at Wendell's to tell him of my conclusion.
WEST ALEXANDER BENCHMARK (just west of the WV/PA state line, at I-70)
I followed M Schwartz's directions in his TR of 2000, nothing has changed. I agree that this peak is a candidate for the Ohio COHP.
