Ascent Trip ReportI am back for the second time this year County High Pointing (among others) in PA, the goal of this 10 day trip is to complete the outstanding 11 PA Counties. First up today is the Allegheny national Forest HP.
From beautiful historic-downtown Bradford (intersection Hwy#219/346, Forman Street) I drove west on 346 for approx 7 miles to a left bend with a dirt road on the right (gated at 50 yards) GPS 41.96803,-78.67487. I parked here, this was my TH.
I walked the dirt road generally north to a fork at .7 miles where I stayed right and continued east another .6 miles to a gate at a road junction (road comes-in from the right), coordinates 41.98357,-78.76029.
This whole private area is fairly open, has oil/gas installations (strong smell of gas, tanks, oil pumps), has been forested with a lot of dead trees/brush, looks a rough. The tall woods of the Allegheny National Forest can be seen 100+yards to the northwest.
I walked a 295 degree compass line 100 yards directly to the corner of the Allegheny National Forest with a Boundary Marker (post and BM), "US DEPT of Agriculture Forest Service, 70,26", my GPS 41.98397,-78.76215. From this spot the Forest Boundary heads west and north
The high ground is on the same compass line 75 yards beyond inside an 8 foot tall fence. Too fragile to scale, so walked the fence (west and north) finding an opening at 50 yards north of the BM. The ground inside is fairly flat nothing obvious, chose my spot at GPS 41.98442,-78.76287 ..... beautiful open tall maples.
2.8 miles, 1h35 hours RT.
"PENNSYLVANIA,PENNSYLVANIA, MAY YOUR FUTURE BE FILLED WITH HONOR EVERLASTING AS YOUR HISTORY" ..... state song's chorus
