Ascent Trip Report

From Highway 60 the well marked Mt. Withington Road runs straight south. The sign at the highway says 17 mi. to the tower; my odometer tallied 18. Earlier trip reports describe the road as a bit rough, but, as the lookout ranger explained, the forest service improved the road two years ago. It's smooth sailing until the intersection about 4 mi. from the top. The last four mlles are a little rougher, but still quite passable for any car with a careful driver.

I parked at the picnic table about 300 feet below the tower. Mr Paez, the full time lookout, welcomed me up for the tour. He walked me 360 degrees around describing the dozens of mountains and ranges visible. I also met two Apache Kid (from the name of the nearby wilderness, the fire fighters looked Navajo to me) fire crews. They were watching for nearby lightning so they could rush down and put out fires before they spread. I spent on hour there talking to Mr. Paez and the fire crews.
