Ascent Trip ReportPart of a side trip during my Trans Catalina Trail hike with Nate.
Dropped my pack at the Silver peak road and TCT trail junction. Carried my poles, map, and camera. Made good time up the road to the 1.5 mile mark where the peak was.... second guessed myself (and my map - doh! Rookie mistake) and decided that the mountains another mile away looked more like the peak. Perhaps I just wanted to hike a little extra distance? After reaching whatever bump that was, it was CLEAR that Silver Peak was a mile behind me. I was thrown off by the lack of marking - I mean... if the road name is SILVER PEAK ROAD, they might have a sign directing us to Silver peak. I'm only half serious on this one - it was my mistake not to check it out when I passed it the first time. Oh well. Jogged back, snagged the peak - found a nice Geocache in an ammo can and small marker. Saw Nate waiting with my pack and jogged down the road to meet up with him and continue onto our camp site at parson's landing. Should have been a quick 3 mile RT, but it ended up being about 5. Extra 1:15 hiking time - well, half hiking half jogging. And a great lesson learned - if you THINK it's the peak and the map you're carrying indicates that it's a peak - check it out. Ugh.
