Ascent Trip Report

After hiking from Avalon to our first campground for the night, I decided to bag two close peaks - Black Jack and Orizaba. From the campground, I basically followed the TCT to a saddle junction, saw a bunch of buffalo and decided to x-country up to a water tower. From there, the road to the peak was clearly discernable. Stayed along the barbed wire fence, slipped through at an opening (always wary of buffalo - they are MUCH bigger in person!!) and then past a gate up a paved road to the summit. The top is covered with satelites and a VORTAC/TACAN (I always get those mixed up) for the local airport a few miles away, and the actual peak was surrounded by a fence. As it was a large, flat-ish area, I ended up heading to what looked like a pile of carins just a few hundred feet away and essentially at the same elevation. No marker or register that I could see - just nice views of the entire Island. 4 mi RT from Blackjack campground. And lots of buffalo! On the return I grabbed Black Jack Peak....
