Ascent Trip Report

Trans Catalina Trail thru hike.
Day 1: Left hotel at 7:00 am. Avalon to the trail head (1.6 miles). Hiked 14 miles to the Blackjack Campground, where we spent the night. Beautiful trail - exposed and a little switch-backy at times, but not bad. Great views of the ocean and lots of scrub brush. Circled behind Avalon, so up until mile 6 or 7 of our hike, we could still see the port. Saw a buffalo at our lunch break at mile 9 of the trail. Very rolling hills in the middle of the island - a few short, steep sections, and there was a bit of rockiness at times, but overall nothing that suggested it would be horribly difficult. Arrived at Blackjack at 3 pm. Solid day of hiking. Took a quick break, and by 3:45, I was ready to summit Orizaba (the highest point on the island) and Blackjack. Total mileage for the day was somewhere around 22. Encountered 5 or 6 buffalo on my way to Orizaba, so I hopped off the main trail and worked my way up a hill past a water tank, cut through a barbed wire fence, and then rejoined the road. Buffalo look bigger in person than they do on tv. :) Overall - great first day of hiking! The TCT was great!
