Ascent Trip Report

Parked car at the "Trout Pond" dirt parking area at the conjuction of SR-79 and Milk Ranch Road. There was a cool stiff breeze at the parking area which diminished during the hike. Took the clockwise route up Middle Peak beginning on Milk Ranch Road. Continued on the road for about 1.7 miles until the intersection of Milk Ranch Rd & Azalea Springs Fire Rd. Note: at this point there are two trails on the north side of Milk Ranch Rd heading up Middle Peak about 30 yards apart. One heads up the east side (which is easy to miss while walking west on Milk Ranch Rd); one heads up the west side. We took the west side which is longer and had views to the west. There is no trail that takes you directly to the top. At some point, bushwacking is required. The south side of the peak had a controlled burn more recently than the devastating Cedar Fire years ago. The controlled burn area would be an easier bushwack. Note: all areas of the peak have tree seedlings planted so watch out for the little guys/protect the future. The route we took started bushwacking from the northwest ridge. The north side has really become overgrown brush so as time goes by it will get harder to access the high point. The high point has commanding views in all directions. Signed the register. We bushwacked to the northeast from the high point which required a lot of "trail" searching and scrapes (recommend going down the east or southeast side through the control burn area) until we reached the Middle Peak Fire Rd. Took the Middle Peak Fire Rd down until it intersects with Milk Ranch Rd. Great views. Saw some deer on the descent.
