Ascent Trip ReportThis is my last day of an eleven day County High Pointing Trip to PA, we will drive home in the morning ...... 11 to go.
This County has 3 Candidate High Point Areas .... 2 on Bartlett Mountain and the other at Ricketts Tower-North Ridge, I visited both of them all as per this one only TR.
BARTLETT MOUNTAIN ..... dirt road/easy wack, 4 miles, 3h20 hours RT including all note taking and breaks.
I used the route in Michael Schwartz TR of 2007, my attempt here is to update/add a few details. This peak has 2 candidate High Point Areas (West and East).
From the intersection of Hwy #87/187 west of Lovelton we drove south on Catlin Hollow Road for .68 miles and parked on the road. This was my TH (41.52838,-76.20242) ..... This spot is 100 yards before Michael's stucco house. No one answered the door. Based on the looks of the driveway it appears the house has little use, although the grass was recently cut.
From my TH I walked the woods east 40 yards to a Power Line (in a wide grass swath) parallel to the road, where I found the dirt road that climbs to the summit area, yellow and blue tape to one side.
All of my hiking distances are guess-estimates.
I walked the road southeast .35 miles to a right bend, generally southwest to a left at the first switchback, northeast to a right at the second switchback, generally south to the crest of the road where the road continues as a grass track bends/descends right. A faint trail is to the left (41.51343,-76.19781) just before the crest of the road at 1.5 miles from the TH.
I walked the trail east 150 yards to a rocky/craggy looking summit area straight ahead, the trail bends/ends right at 50 yards. I bushwacked east to the south side of the rocky plateau, then scrambled walked north on the plateau, mostly rock surfaces with sparse vegetation. After checking out the high spots I chose my WEST AREA at the north end at GPS 41.51406,-76.19370.
I walked/descended east, arrived at another rocky craggy looking summit at 200 yards, after scrambling around on huge rock slabs, I continued east for another 100+ yards to my chosen EAST AREA in a rocky field, GPS 41.51398,-76.19103.
The hiking distance from the crest of the road to the furthest East Area is less than .5 miles .... mostly open deciduous woods, an easy wack with some rock scrambling. The descent to the TH from this East Area (2 miles) took 1 hour.
RICKETTS TOWER-NORTH RIDGE .... 1.2 miles, 35 minutes RT.
For the driving directions to the TH see Cherry Ridge TR.
From Opperman Pass I climbed the dirt road northeast .5 miles to the summit of Ricketts Fire Tower. I continued north on the road for a few hundred yards to a narrow ridge with a long clearing and grass and rock surface. 2 Rocky Cabins are to the right side and a shed at the very north end of the clearing. No evidence of County Line. I chose my HP at GPS 41.37804,-76.24931. The ground drops off steeply on each side of the 25 yards wide narrow ridge.
We overnighted at a Scranton Hotel before driving home in the morning.
