Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club DPS Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Jim Fleming
There is a pretty major obstruction in the 4WD jeep road at 4,500', well short of the DPS Guide's suggested 4WD parking spot at 5,850'. We weren't able to get past it, so we parked and started out from here.
Rather than take the standard DPS route by continuing north up the canyon on the jeep road to about 5,850' and then heading west up the steep to gain the main ridge to Virgin Peak, we sought a more gentle route by gaining a north-south spur ridge off the jeep road at about 5,100' and then following it as it climbs north and then west to intersect the main ridge and following that to the summit.
I actually got a little confused with the terrain though and missed the minor ridge at 5,100' (despite it's being well marked with a cairn). I didn't take us too far up the jeep road though; I figured out my confusion within about 0.5 mile and at 5,450' we headed west up the relatively mild slope to the main ridgeline. Once on the main ridge we followed a route directly along its spine, sometimes on a faint use trail. At about 6,925' we intersected the DPS route coming up from the east; from here the route is occasionally ducked.
We did follow our originally intended route out, and it is a pretty mild alternative to the DPS route.
