Ascent Trip ReportWe generally followed the Zdon route detailed in Eric & BMS914's GPS track. Came 6 inches from stepping on a rattlesnake when we were crossing the desert flats on the way in, luckily he was still sluggish in the cool early morning air. After a minute of pictures, he finally crawled slowly away into a nearby bush. As other reports have stated, south ridge route is a long loose slog heading up, but great fun with some scree-skiing on the downhill. The day started to warm up as we crossed the valley on the way back from the peak. A lingering cold and the hot temps combined to hit me hard during the last 15 mins of the hike. Upon arriving at the car, I collapsed in a foldable chair and lost most of the 5 liters of water that I had drank during the hike along with some residual lung mucus. No more Mojave hiking this season for me. |
