Ascent Trip Report

Followed Bob Sumner's route description in his Nevada County High Points book. Description worked perfectly. Drove 0.2 miles to first turn past Basque summit to shorten hike route slightly, but could have driven my Jeep Cherokee 0.7 miles further along the road towards the peak. Beyond this is a steep, loose rocky section of jeep road along the fence line that will stop most 4WD SUVs.

The only addition I would add to Sumner's description is that there is a cow trail just beyond Point 9120 allows one to contour over to the main ridge, and save about 200 ft of gain. Follow the road past Point 9120 and just as the road veers right, away from Desatoya Peak, there are 2 cow trails about 15 feet apart leaving the road. The second, higher trail leads all the way to the saddle below Desatoya Pk. The first trail leads only half-way to the saddle and appears to end in a place cattle use as a dust bath or for sleeping.

Hiked over Sumner's bonus peak, the north summit of Desatoya, on way back.
