Ascent of Bear Mountain on 2013-05-03
|Date:||Friday, May 3, 2013|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||2323 ft / 708 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI started from the west side, from an obscure trailhead on Mt. Washington Road roughly a quarter mile south of the MA/CT state line. I parked at the state line, and did a big loop over Mt. Frissell and Brace Mountain. I added on Bear Mountain near the end of that loop, which I describe here.
The trail to Bear Mountain angles southeast from Mt. Washington Road. The trail looks like a road on the map, and may well have been a road at one time, but now most of it has become lovely single-track trail. The trail is good, the slope is gentle, and I found it to be easily runable.
After almost a mile, the trail meets up with the AT at the base of Bear Mountain. I turned left and followed the AT up a moderate grade about a half mile to the summit. There are nice views along the way, and also from various spots in the summit area.
