Ascent Trip Report

3am start from the Lykken Trailhead. Group of 8 that would eventually become 6. 71F/22C at the trailhead (yes, at 3am!).

We chose to start from Lykken this year instead of the Palm Springs Art Museum because we had heard Lykken offered a more gradual initial ascent. Our experience confirmed that. Sure, starting from Lykken added a little extra distance, but the gentler initial slope did a great job at warming our legs. Personally, I don't mind the alternative route from the museum that starts with stair climbing--to each his/her own. In either case, the Lykken trail intersects the typical Skyline trail just above the picnic tables, so there is no route confusion.

With a full moon, we didn't need headlamps, which was awesome. It sure was warm, though. No snow/ice anywhere on Skyline. We took our time headed up. Lykken to the top of Skyline took under 7hr for most of us. Not an earth-shattering speed, but at 6h35min my time was still an hour less than it took me last year.

The few of us who detoured to tag Miller on the way to San Jacinto ended up getting to the top of San Jacinto a little after 2pm. It was a popular day for the folks coming from the tram as there were dozens of people all over the place around the summit. Still, the weather and company were both excellent. We had a great time lounging and even got a show from an airplane glider circling to the north.

A couple people continued to Folly and the other few from the group hung out and napped on San J. Me - I opted to go ahead and head back down to the tram at 3pm.

The hike down was peaceful by myself, enjoying the scenery and sounds and smells. Got to the tram by 5pm and enjoyed a beer with a crappy piece of cheese pizza from the bar.
