Ascent Trip ReportDay #77 cross into PA
The Trail continues on South Mountain Ridge, stopped at Black Rock, Cowall shelter, and at High Rock with its multicoloured painted rocks all over the place. This open spot is a hand-gliding launch site, it has a huge vertical drop with a great view. I rested here to enjoy the view.
The AT bypasses the summit of Quirauk Mountain which is a very short distance away. I hiked up the road to a military installation on the summit, only to be disappointed at the gate by the armed guard, who shortly told me, "There is no entry without prior written permission."
I got out there fast without discussion.
There is no way that I want to go thru all the hassle of getting a permit and having to come back here. I am close enough to the summit so i'll call this as being successfull .... purist I am not.
I chatted with "Elvis", the caretaker (dressed/sideburns), at Pen-Mar Park, he apparently has an Elvis collection worth over 300,000 US$. The AT enters PA at North-End of the Park.
At us PA16 a local lady, who always picks up hikers, drove me into Waynesboro PA & best Western Inn - tomorrow is a zero day. To PO to pick limmers and maps, noc socks not here !!!
Tomorrow Day # 78, will resupply + PO for scarpa boots, socks, maps and katadyn filter, Services are spread out, meaning lots of walking, on a so called rest day which is always busy.
AVERAGE STATS AFTER 77 DAYS (includes 8 rest days)
6 states (GA,NC,TN,VA,WV MD), 1052.7 total miles, 5.4 hiking hrs/day, 2.8 mph, 15.2 miles/day, 45 miles of ascent and a projected finish date of sept 17.
