Ascent Trip Report

Being our last day in Tasmania I wanted to sneak in one more hike. I also really wanted to summit something and what better mountain to do that with then Hobart's own Mt Wellington. My climbing partner for the day was our travel buddy for the past two weeks, Justus from Germany.

We drove out to the parking lot and started off on the wrong trail. We started heading down the Lenah track descending gradually for some time. We finally realized our mistake when we came upon the Hunters Track. We decided to take the Hunters track to get back to the Organ Track which would get us back on Track. The assent up Hunter was grueling, with no brakes and the sun beaming down on us. Justus wasn't really enjoy the climb up and we took breaks here and there to help hydrate.

We finally reached the Chalet which got us onto the Organ Track that would take us to the Pinnacle Track. It was a stunning walk walking both by the pipes and looking out over Hobart and the bays of Tassie.

When we got to the start of the assent up Wellington, Justus decided that he had enough. I gave him the keys and he descended to the car. We decided that he would drive up to the top and meet me there. I turned and started the quick assent up.

It was a tough hike up, quite steep and I was secretly racing Justus to the top. Man vs Machine. After about 45 minutes of powering myself upwards I reached the top. I, besides boat loads of people getting off of busses, was looking out towards Hobart and on top of Wellington. I also beat Justus by 15 minutes.

Overall: Besides the wrong turn right off the start this was a fun hike. I enjoyed the pain up Pinnacle Track, and beating Justus to the top. Wellington is a high populated tourist area so any enjoyment and personal connection with the mountain wasn't really gained. I did sniff out my own space for a bit and waited for Justus. I left Tasmania in the right way.
