Ascent Trip Report

Used Dennis Poulin's drive route to get to the brown gate that is the start of the climb route on the western edge of Humboldt State Park. If I recall correctly, the unsigned brown gate is about 7 miles west of Albee Campground. I was riding my mtn bike to this peak, since I wanted to conserve energy for hike up Grasshopper Pk in the afternoon. Started at the crack of dawn. There are little markers indicating mileage along the way. And before you leave the park at the 2.5 mile mark, there are small signs indicating where the hikers route goes at junctions.

I rode to the first summit with the enclosed 3600 ft contour line...right up to the radio facility. Couldn't get my mtn bike into the lowest 3 gears so I had to walk my bike on a few short sections of steep road. That's my excuse for walking the bike. Naturally, a second enclosed 3600 ft contour line 1.5 miles further along Rainbow Ridge is marked as the highpoint on Peakbagger (Note: the south summit with the radio facility was identified as the true P2K highpoint in 2017>. So off I went to go get that possible high point too. It's unclear which is actually higher. At the base of this second summit is a junction with an almost hidden sign that says "Vevoda Ranch Bypass" to the right. Go left at this junction and come to a locked gate in 100 feet.

This is the edge of Vevoda Ranch and there's a sign here indicating permission is needed for any extended stay on the ranch. Since I was planning less than an hour there to visit the peak, I figured I was OK. I rode a couple tenths of a mile more to where the road begins to curve more north. I pushed my bike up the final grass-covered hill to the summit. The highpoint of this 3600 contour appears to be a pile of old moss-covered rocks just inside the tree line on the mostly grassy summit.

On the way back I picked up the named South Rainbow Peak as a bonus. This summit had an old pile of slash at the top.

This is a beautiful area and very remote. Never saw anyone else and no houses or ranches in view.
