Ascent Trip Report

just a few hundred yards east of this peak is the spot where Garrett and Alleghany Counties Md. and Somerset, Pa. intersect and that spot, along with Dan's Rock, one of the two hp's for Alleghany C. Md. Not as scenically impressive as Dans Rock, but a real climb. Although the ridge is now covered with windmills and various construction roads, there does not appear to be easy access to the spot. I followed roughly the same route as previous county high pointers, such as Bob Packard, e.g. McKenzie Hollow Rd to Old Mt. Savage Rd. and then a rough dirt track up towards the windmills. I found this blocked by deep snow drifts and debris at 1.15 mi. from the hp coordinates by GPS. The snow was deeper than yesterday's climb on Wills Mt., several drifts more than a foot deep. AV tracks offered some help but not much . I tried using some of the tower access roads that were mostly clear, but of course none of them headed in quite the right direction. Whatever I saved in bushwhack I lost in extra mileage. Circular routes both up and down totaled about 3.8 mi. rt. Took quite a while forcing me to shelf some of my plan for the rest of the day.

I did do Dans Rock later that afternoon, however. The ridge with the liner hp is visible from Dans Rock. I didn't have any sighting equipment but I got the rough impression that the highest part of the ridge containing the liner point is higher than Dans Rock, but the liner point is not the highest spot on the ridge. I look forward to a LIDAR analysis to determine which of these two points is the true high point of Alleghany County.
