Ascent Trip Report

Following Todd's Hiking guide directions I went to the Kiosk on Courthouse/Centennial Rd. I almost got my truck camper stuck in the sand there so decided not to drive the extra mile as described in his instructions and parked just to the south of the kiosk. I had some things to do in the morning so didn't get started until about 12:30, walking from there. When I approached the mountain I couldn't tell which route he was describing, either from his directions or his map. At first I was planning on going up the draw nearest to the summit but then I traversed over to the next one to the right, which not only looked easier but I thought it might be the one he referred to. However I never did see and signs of any route and no cairns. It was a fairly easy route except for the brush, especially cat's claw. Only once did I see a broken twig that looked like someone else might have gone through there but no other signs of human use. There was some loose gravel that looked like game used the route but it could have been just erosion as well. After reaching a more open bowl area I went off to the right and scrambled up a more exposed route to the mesa on top, which of course was on the far end from the summit, so headed over that way. By the time I reached the steep drop down to the valley before the summit spires I realized that I didn't have time to climb up to them, and because I didn't have climbing gear to continue to the top, it was too hard to give up and head down. I wasn't really anxious to return the same way so decided to go down the easy looking slope on the back side and around the southeast end. This turned out to be farther and take longer than I expected, some of that due to difficulty in getting down steep washes to the more gradual slopes below. It was probably more difficult than my route up as well, but I made it safely, returning to my camper just as it got dark. I was on my way to Phoenix for the weekend and still wanted to climb Woolsey Peak before that, and the forecast was for the next day being nice and then 2 days of rain so headed on to Woolsey. Will have to go back and try Eagletail another time.
