Ascent Trip Report

Approached from the west because the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) was closed due to snow/ice. Came in Dillingham Rd. and planned to use Forest Service Road 74 but found that it was closed. Instead began hiking on Trail 183 to FS74 and hiked on road to Douglas Falls trailhead.
Continued on Trail 162 past falls (trail continues on left of falls). Trail is marked with faint yellow paint on trees. Snow on ground and light useage made it difficult to follow trail at times. Trail switchbacks up to MST. Turn left and ascend to BRP.
Could not find a trail to ascend Craggy Dome and walked past it to the southwest on the BRP and began ascent. Horrible route, choked with laurel and briars and extremely thick. Had to crawl in many areas.
Summit only has a rusty metal post surrounded by chest-high brush. Can see views somewhat over brush. Descended to the north/east toward the Graybeard Overlook and found a much easier path through mainly open trees - definitely the best route.
Returned by going down BRP to Locust Knob past mile 362. Entered woods on ridge and bushwhacked west down ridge and then left/southwest to rejoin FS74. Numerous overgrown old logging roads in area.
