Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the gate in Idylwild- it was technically closed and the rangers told us it was NOT open - but we saw it was open and were passed by two cars while walking the mile+ to the actual trail head. Was passable, but when we came down, we noticed it had been closed - not locked. Steady climb - trail was in GREAT condition... very foggy and misty on the lower slopes. A few pockets of snow on the northern side and in the shadows. Snow levels weren't deep - the snow had pretty much crusted over and my party of three pretty much followed the footsteps. We were told that technical gear wasn't required, but there were a few places where microspikes would have been nice. Hiking poles were good! After the 7k foot mark, the snow increased - again not deep, just slick in the shade. Made it to the top without too much trouble - but we were cautious and took our time. Spent 30 minutes on the top - nice views of the other peaks, but couldn't see much because of the cloud layer at 7k feet. On the way down, encountered two other parties on the mountain - one guy had snowshoes in his pack, but wasn't planning on using them. Overall great hike and great day in the mountains. BEAUTIFUL!
