Ascent Trip ReportI drove home from Ithaca Friday night and left at 05:00 Saturday morning. As the sun began to come up while driving, it began to clear up and looked like the weather would follow the forecast. I turned down Corey’s Rd and parked at the Seward Range trailhead. I thought back to my first three winter high peaks, Donaldson, Emmons, and Seward my freshman year. I hit the trail just after 08:00 and headed down the horse and hiking trail for a short distance before breaking off onto the red-marked trail and headed toward’s Ward’s brook. It was a great morning, with temps in the 30’s and sunny. I made good time along the trail, which was scenic and easy going through the woods. I arrived at the Ward’s Brook truck trail and continued on. I paused when I reached the Ward Brook lean-to, which looks like a fantastic spot to stay, as it’s very new and nicely built with a fireplace and picnic table. Shortly after I passed the Ward Brook lean-to, I arrived at the cairn for the Seymour herd path. I began my ascent, and soon found snow. The trail was nice, with a relatively gentle ascent along the brook. I passed three older hikers on their way up, and shortly thereafter stopped to don my microspikes as ice accompanied the snow on the section of the trail that climbed a slide. I continued along the icy slide, wondering why I had waited so long to purchase a pair of microspikes. The ice subsided and after a short hike along the ridge, I had the summit all to myself. I had some water, Clif bars, and took some photos. I enjoyed the limited views and blue skies before heading back down, passing the two groups that I had passed earlier in the day. The descent was not too tricky, though I was glad when I was able to remove my spikes at the bottom of the slide. As I was getting toward the junction of the herd path and truck trail, I was curious what time it was, having forgotten my watch. I was guessing perhaps around 14:00, and was quite surprised to check my phone and find it to be 12:30. The rest of the hike out was uneventful, though certainly stoic and I arrived back at the car at 14:00. I headed into Lake Placid and grabbed a bite to eat and headed to Heart Lake to set up camp for the night.
