Ascent Trip Report

I hiked this with Scott Surgent.

Issues include getting a permit for access (search the web for access to the Cabeza Prieta NWR) and the fact that you are so close to Mexico (expect multiple interactions with the Border Patrol).

The walk across the flat desert is frustrating, because the BP drives it regularly but you are not allowed to. The ~2 miles and 1800' up and down in the canyon was about half our day, the roughly 16 miles of road hiking was the other half. It was a 12-hour day at our pace, though the register indicates that some people are much quicker. There is some route-finding on the way up the peak, and I would say we got into low Class 3 terrain several times.
