Ascent Trip ReportI was staying at the Hilton Waikoloa. Drive took about 1.5 hours. I hung out at the visitor's center for about an hour to help acclimatize. I had just finished a triathlon 3 days prior so my body was fatigued a bit; not as hydrated as usual. I recommend on starting very early in the morning from the visitor's center. I dropped a climbing registration sheet in the drop box. The trail was well marked with many sections loose lava rock. Water is the main commodity to track as water isn't available at the observatories. I took 3 liters (2 up, 1 down). Hike took 5.25 hours up (with a detour due to construction near the top which added easily 45 min) and 2.5 hours down to the visitor's center. Closed the hike plan and bought souvenirs at the center. Most visitors come at night for the telescopes. Back down at the beach for dinner. Imagine the looks I got from the other hotel guests as I'm walking through the lobby with fully climbing gear (long sleeves, helmet camera, etc). |
