Ascent Trip ReportTook the day off from work to take my dog Jax, who's an 11-month old Golden Retriever, on his first hike before the big snowstorm hits. Parked at the trailhead for the East Trail just off of Green Lake Rd. There was 1-2 inches of fresh snow and that was really it on the trail, so there was no need for snowshoes. I'm sure that will be a different story tomorrow. Some spots had patches of ice, but it was pretty easy going. Because Jax listens well and there were no other tracks in the snow, I felt comfortable letting him off the leash. He had a blast and I'm sure that while I climbed the mountain once today, with his running ahead, then back to me, then back ahead, he must have done the mountain a time and a half. Luckily he never went more than 50 feet or so from me before he would come back down or sit patiently to wait. The tower quickly came into view and it was breezy and in the low teens at the top. We rested for a few, took some pictures and headed back down. In all it was a 55 minute hike, which is about 1/3 of the time it took to drive there and back from Glens Falls. I'm very happy that the experience was a good one and the puppy enjoyed himself because I plan to keep him on most of my hikes from now on.
Not only did I choose this mountain today because it was an easier one to start him out on, but also because I'm reclimbing the peaks in the Fire Tower Challenge in the winter to get my winter patch, which is something they started last year. With this, Black Mt. a few weeks ago, and then Mt. Arab and Lyon Mt. my first time through the list, I've got 4 done and only 24 to go. There's no way I'll get them all done in the next 6 weeks, but I hope to get a big chunk out of the way. On a similar note, I have also set a goal for myself of climbing 52 different mountains this year. Today makes #2 on my personal challenge.
