Ascent Trip Report

This is one of the highest peaks in the Laurentians north of Montreal. An easy 90 minute or so drive from Montreal, perfect for a day trip. The maintained trail is accessed for a small day-use fee from the base de plein air L'interval, a little south of Saint-Donat.

You get a view of Mont Kaaikop's summit upon arriving at the reception area, which is situated in a great spot on Lac-Legault. The trail heads upwards after a few hundred meters, and is a sustained, sometimes steep climb, but without any technical difficulties, getting to the summit in 3 km. Today was chilly, but winds were calm and the sky perfectly clear. There are 2 good view points at the summit, which gives very nice views towards the Montagne Noire and Mont-Tremblant and surrounding areas, one of the nicest in the area. Continuing the "Grand Tour", the descent was easy, much less steep, though there was a light dusting of snow on the north slope going down. Total distance is 12 km. Probably would be a good snowshoe hike.
