Ascent Trip Report

The first trip of the year and trying out the new (to me) MSR Denali Ascent snowshoes to make sure they held together. They're the first pair with the heel-lifters that I've used, but I completely forgot that they were even there until we got back to the car - oops.

'Backcountry' travel with front country closeness, we departed from the Mazama TH (in front of ODOT barns), followed the 'road' to the SSW for a few hundred feet, then pretty much just went straight up the hill. There were a few places where it got pretty steep (>45 degrees) and I was a bit concerned for the rest of my crew, but they pulled through like champs! I cut the trail all the way up, though we did find some other tracks near the summit that looked to be 1-2 days old. We had the summit (and mtn) all to ourselves.

Great true summit super close in. Great views of Mt. Hood, and probably the volcanoes to the south (Jeff, Sisters, etc) if the clouds cooperate. The East edge of Gov't Camp is visible if you look closely, and traffic noise from 26 is just discernible if the wind isn't blowing.

Practiced stream crossing in the snow on the return, though not necessary for the ascent.
