Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Jim Fleming, Chris Spisak, Lilly Fukui
Outing consisted of summiting Hines Peak, Topatopa Bluff, and Chief Peak on my birthday. Drove in to trailhead along the Nordhoff Ridge Road from the Rose Valley Campground. The combination to the locked gate at Rose Valley Campground was given to us along with our permits from the Forest Service in Ojai. A permit was required for each vehicle and allowed a maximum of four people per permit. Permits were restricted to 4WD vehicles, although the drive in could have easily been done in a 2WD Yaris. Three permits were obtained for three 4WD vehicles, each carrying four people.
Route up was via the Red Reef Trail, then over the steadily narrowing (from erosion) "knife edge" ridge to Hines Peak, followed by a return on the Red Reef Trail to Topatopa Bluff and then down along the west side of Topatopa on the Last Chance Trail to the vehicles. From this trailhead we drove back down the way we came in to the parking area for Chief Peak. Chief Peak was attained by following a very well marked use trail to a rocky summit. All the trails were in good shape and easy to follow. Views from all three summits were superb, with all of the Channel Islands clearly visible. Mileage for Hines/Topatopa was 7.7 miles RT and 2,400' gain, for Chief 1.0 mile RT with 600' gain.
Mileage and gain below is the total for all three peaks.
