Ascent Trip ReportPontotoc county Mississippi has one contour above 580 feet as well as another very interesting hill about a half mile north of the official high point.
To reach this highpoint, take Main Street (Main Street becomes MS-15)
south out of the town of Pontotoc for 9.3 miles.
Turn left onto Toxish Rd and go 2.8 miles.
Turn left onto County Rd 99/Goodford Rd.
The highpoint is .3 miles north on the left side of the road.
As Fred Dale reported in 2001, there was a small house one the land and 3 dogs were the only ones home. I made a quick tour of the contour and beat a hasty retreat.
I did not stop to look for the remains of the fire tower or the Troy benchmark but I did investigate the hill to the north mentioned by Fred Lobdell in another report by in the COHP yahoo group. This hill is at the intersection of Ware Road.
By looking at the contour, the 574 foot spot elevation where it crosses the road and sight-leveling the hill, it may be very close to cresting above 580 feet. This contour is a small hay field that allowed some view of the surrounding farm land.
As Fred L suggested, I would be interested in what LiDAR has to say about these two points
I combined visiting Pontotoc with Clay county, Chickasaw county and Calhoun county, in that order
