Ascent Trip Report

On GA-75, 3.5 miles N of the junction with US-129 in Cleveland, I turned SE on Tom Bell Rd. Zero or note your odometer at this point. At 0.2 mile I turned L on Chambers Rd. At 0.9 mile I turned L at a Chattahoochee NF sign indicating the Yonah Mtn TH. At 1.3 miles I parked at the TH which has facilities and maps.

The trail takes off near the beginning of the parking area on the L side. It climbs gradually in the forest, negotiates a few rocks, and eventually reaches a flat clearing with a view from its rim. Then it continued upward, eventually joining a road on which I turned R (uphill, of course). A few minutes later it reaches a military camp on a flat shoulder of the N ridge of the mountain @~2750'. Signs indicate that the camp is used mainly to practice rappelling on the W face of the mountain, which is also a noted rock climbing area. The road makes a sharp R turn here. A couple hundred feet below the summit, the road traverses an open slab. The very summit is an open grassy field, once occupied by a LO, with no views of its own because of the surrounding trees. It is well worth it, however, to hike slightly down the W side on a network of climbing trails to enjoy the view from the top of the sheer rock face.
