Ascent Trip ReportTook the nice country road Grange Hall Road west from the Lapeer CHP to this alternate CHP for Oakland County. Although the reports show it is higher than the accepted CHP it is artificially higher to make the ski mountain. I found that it is also artificially lower.
I parked at the closed gate and noticed that only one car was in the parking lot. A lady was leaving at 6:00 PM as I walked up and I wondered if she would inquire why I was there and prepared my speel about being from FL and wanting to bag it as a CHP and then instead simply looked at my cell phone application tracking my stats and she ingnored me. Nobody was thus around and I had the slopes to myself.
Upon successfully jogging up to the top (with a bunch of walking to catch my breath)I took some photos to document and headed down the steepest longested ski slope along the SE section of the mountain. The resort rates it as a "Black slope" but that must be a MI black as it was not nearly as steep as a black out west. I was able to run it from the top to the bottom without stumbling and falling.
At the bottom, their is a deep pit for the lowest chair lift. This pit is substantially lower than the adjacent road and to climb out, i estimate is another 40 feet or so. Thus, if one wants to maximize the gain for the fun of climbing this, I recommend starting on this longer steeper section of the mountain.
I was down by 6:16 PM pretty good time for the mile since the uphill was steep and the downhill running was tough on the knees. The 16 minute RT included taking photos and checking out the views in all directions.
