Ascent Trip Report

From the Cabarrus County high point area, I took the following route, courtesy of Google Maps:

North on NC 3 into Mooresville, to Culp St, turn right,
Drive .3 mi to Main St., turn right
Drive to first left, Park Ave, signed NC 801 N, turn left
Drive 12.6 mi to junction with Sherrill’s Ford road, turn left to stay on NC 801
Drive 1.8 mi to cross Statesville Road / US 70, road becomes Barber Junction Road (NC 801 turns right – go straight)
Continue on Baker Junction Road .5 mi to Baker-Mill Road, turn left
Drive .6 to road signed Young Mountain Road, turn right (the Morning Star Baptist Church is still at this corner)
Drive .6 along pot-holed road to top of Young Mountain

I found Young Mountain road to be passable by virtually any passenger vehicle, as long as you drive SLOWLY. I had a relatively low clearance passenger vehicle, and by driving very carefully, I did not scrape bottom once on the way up. On the way down, I was not as careful, and did scrape the bottom once, but it was minor.
